Dr Kaija-Liisa Koovit is a historian of medicine and medical technology
With over ten years of experience as a medical historian, lecturer, and curator, I am passionate about exploring and communicating medicine and medical technologies' past, present, and future. In 2024 I was awarded the Medical Humanities China-UK (MHCUK) Early Career Fellowship.
About me
I have a PhD in History of Medicine from the University of Leeds, where I conducted original research on the history of partial knee replacement surgery and international arthroplasty registries. Since 2017 I have been the board member and research secretary for the Estonian Association of the History and Philosophy of Science.
I have worked as a curator at the University of Tartu Museum in Estonia, where I managed and exhibited historical collections of medical instruments and devices, and as a junior lecturer in the History of Medicine at the University of Tartu Institute of Family Medicine and Public Health. I have been involved in academic editing, translation, and editorial assistance for journals and books in History and Philosophy of Science. I have developed skills in data curation, archives management, archival research, and academic writing. I am fluent in Estonian, English, and German and am keenly interested in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives on medicine and science.
